I’m never happy with the way my blogs look

by Davinian on August 14, 2007

I think it is fair to say that I am constantly trying to find a better look and feel for my website – this must be the 100th + such theme change for Davinian, and I suspect it wont be the last!

The Power of Colour

by Davinian on August 1, 2007

colour-wheelIt’s amazing how a simple change in colour makes your site look so different.

Not sure if you have visited before, but I had a rather depressing grey gradation for a background. After a little bit of research in colour psychology, I discovered that green is one of the most pleasing colours on the eye and can even improve vision.

It’s also a calming and refreshing colour, one reason why you feel so good when outside. Dark green (note the background) is considered masculine, conservative, and implies wealth!

There are plenty of websites on Colour Psychology, a few I’ve looked at are: infoplease colo(u)r, designcrux Colo(u)r Psychology and Colour Affects.

A question for readers – what colour if any do you most like and do you think it is important from a design and ultimately a sale point of view to take colour into consideration when designing the look of your product?

NOTE: You may have noticed that the background colour is no-longer green! this is because I changed the theme (again) on the 14th August 2007 — Orange is the new black you know!

I’m back, well sort of

by Davinian on May 6, 2007

I know it’s been a while, but I’m still here, just less vocal — which is probably a good thing? Anyway, I had to post this as it’s just weird how things like this happen.

While enjoying a cold barbecue with friends on Friday we started talking about books and how we hadn’t seen any second hand copies by our favourites authors of late. Granted, the odd one or two turns up every now and then, but they are usually books we already own, or in such bad condition that they are only fit for reading in the bath!

gene_vincentThen on Saturday while hunting for bits and bobs for an adventure I am planning (more on this soon), I happened to stumble upon a book by Mick Farren, which as you can guess, is one of my favourite authors! The book in question turns out to be Gene Vincent, a book I had been looking for for a while, so not only had I proved our BBQ conversation wrong, I had also found a little gem.

The book is currently on back-order on Amazon, but the synopsis is spot on:

There’s one in every town: Gene Vincent was the original and legendary black-leather bad-boy of rock ‘n’ roll. His records were banned and censored, his live shows incited riots, he wrecked hotel rooms while Keith Moon was still a schoolboy, his private life was a combat zone of booze, pills, guns, and women, and he ultimately died for the bluejean bop. Without him there would have been no Jim Morrison, no Sid, no Marilyn Manson, and even Elvis would have struggled. And that’s why Gene Vincent is still remembered and celebrated thirty years after he should have been dead and gone.

Sometimes I feel like Ratbert!

by Davinian on October 26, 2006

ratbertToday’s Dilbert strip made me chuckle, because there are times when I kind of feel a little bit like Ratbert.

If there is only one thing I ‘must’ do every day, it is to check the latest Dilbert.

You can check today’s Ratbert funny (here), and all that has gone before at www.dilbert.com.

Enjoy!

I could let this one slip by

by Davinian on October 20, 2006

monkey08While scanning through my daily feeds, I happened upon a story linking to another article that linked to this: “Monkeys” [link] on what I think is a Russian(?) LiveJournal blog.

At first the pictures just made me laugh, but then when I looked a little closely, staring into their eyes, I got the feeling that I was looking at, dare I say it, a distant cousin or long lost relative!

The more I looked the more human they looked. Their faces are all different yet have all the characteristics of any human portrait picture. Bewilderment at what the hell is going on, frustration as to why something so simple can take so long and with out a doubt — failing to smile when the picture is actually taken.

Takes me back to those school photos, god how I hated them!

Interesting list of censored stories from 2005-2007

by Davinian on September 13, 2006

donotpublishWith the ever increasing speed and frenzy for supply the masses with information, it’s easy to see why some stories just don’t cut-it and make the headlines!

But then when you stop and think about all the negative news that’s pumped into almost every living room via the TV and browsed by thousands every day in newspapers and on the web, there shouldn’t really be an excuse to miss anything — should there?

Just because your paranoid (Mac Security)

by Davinian on September 5, 2006

passwordprotectSecurity is always a good idea, it protects you from all those nasty viruses and evil hackers that you just know are lurking in the darker corners of the web, waiting silently to slip into you computer and take over your life!

But even if you have the best security in the world, it wont protect you from your office mates or so called friends who you invite around for a cup of coffee and a chat.

The perils of not password-protecting your computer is just as bad, we can laugh about it, but it can be a lot more dangerous than not running a firewall or not having anti-virus software installed. If you’re laughing at this right now, ask yourself, would you really let the person sitting next to you freely browse the contents of your computer?

Below are 5 simple steps to password protecting your Mac*

New iMac Problems

by Davinian on September 3, 2006

imac-02I bought a new 20 inch Core Duo iMac a few months ago, my first Apple product in four years. Its clean edges look fantastic on the desk and it sits like a big brother next to my old 12 inch PowerBook G4 .

But after a few weeks (conveniently just out of the 14 day return policy) I started noticing something weird happening after waking the iMac from sleep mode. At first there was a weird flickering across the screen, the kind of flicker you get when degaussing a conventional monitor. But this seemed to last longer and longer with each sleep and eventually took over an hour to clear itself, and even longer if it had been in sleep mode overnight.

Journal [dot] Davinian has left the building

by Davinian on September 1, 2006

journalSomethings are immortal, others just fade, becoming a distant memory! The demise of Journal [dot] Davinian is probably neither of those, and to be perfectly honest I’m glad…

I guess it was fun for a while and did bring a smile to some faces, but for others – it was a pain in the arse! So at least they will be relieved that I’ve closed it down and banished it to the deepest recesses of my mind…

Going forwards, davinian will be my main platform for a more sensible, yet slightly sideways glance and the world around me.

I hope you enjoy?
